About Chisels

Yoita or Kanto style chisels may have a small gap between the neck and the ferrule. This does not affect the strength or usability in any way. The gap will be closed over time by tapping with a hammer. On the other hand, in Miki or Kansai style chisels, this gap is filled by welding and grinding.

Common sizes are: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24, 30, 36 and 42mm. A typical set of 10 bench chisels is this combination. In addition to these, 1.5 and 45 mm are popular too.

The most popular species used for chisel handles are Japanese white oak and red oak. Other popular materials are ebony and oleaster.
